LI News Blast #3: LI Meeting Details, Per Session, and Updates

Hello LIs!  Happy Friday-before-Break!  Always a great day!

Please continue to reach out for support with grading -- it's a lot of work and I'm happy to help in any capacity.

Rescheduled LI Meeting:
  • Thank you all for bearing with us regarding the last minute cancellation of our scheduled LI Meeting (2/12)!
  • We are rescheduling for Tuesday, February 26th, 5:00-7:00 at 65 Court Street, Room 305.  MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!
    • I will send out a reminder email on Monday, February 25th.

Per Session Protocol:
  • Every month, you will submit two per session forms and two NYCTA sign in sheets for the xx/15/19 pay period and the xx/30/19 pay period.
  • I will ask for your per session and sign in forms about 5 days in advance of the deadline for submission to allow plenty of time for corrections, if needed.  We want you to get paid on time!
  • Blank per session forms and sign in sheets live here.
  • You will upload your completed per session and sign in forms here in the folder with your name (or the Substitute folder).  DO NOT put your social security number on your per session form.
  • For this round of per session submissions, you will submit 3 per session forms and 3 corresponding sign in sheets:
    • Pay Period ending 1/31
    • Pay Period ending 2/15
    • Pay Period ending 2/28
      • Click here for sample completed per session forms and sign in sheets for these three pay periods.
  • I recommend using an App like Genius Scan to PDF your forms into one document.
  • Save your document in the following format: LastName.FirstName.Month
    • Ex: Morel.Laura.February
  • Per Session for this month is due Monday, February 25th.

Staff Website Updates:
  • The LI Absence and Substitute Policy lives permanently on the Staff Website so you now have more than one means of accessing this information (via the Blog or website).
  • The Contact List for regular LIs and subs also lives on the Staff Website.
  • The Process Document for responding to late or missing papers has also been posted to the Staff Website.
  • Lastly, you can now find the Spring 2019 PT Handbook on the website for easy access -- this can assist you if your PTs are confused about Professionalism expectations, absences, etc.  Everything is clearly outlined in their handbook.

Exit Tickets
  • Please continue to review and follow up on Exit Tickets!  We still only have about 60%of PTs answering the Exit Tickets.  Completing them is a professional expectation.
    • You can see the Exit Tickets the day after each session.  A spreadsheet with the responses will be in the session folder.
    • I'm happy to provide support around following up with a PT on this matter.

Upcoming SBS:

2.27 Delivering Direction Instruction
  • Review the session pre-work and preview the videos in the slides.
  • Keep a pulse on PTs who have clearly not done the pre-work, based on their responses to the Do Now.  If this becomes a pattern for any PT, you should consider having a conversation about Professionalism expectations.
  • Feel free to change the discussion protocol on slide 3 from the "Snowball" or "Pyramid" protocol to another that you would like to model for your PTs.
  • Slide 9 reviews the components of direct instruction.  You may consider sharing the layout of your approach to direct instruction as well.
  • Slide 12: Consider adding a Think Aloud to model a Think Aloud!  Or share how you have used this strategy and modeling in your own lessons.
  • Reserve the full 17 minutes for the practice at the end, before the Exit Ticket and Closing.

2.27 D75 Scaffolding
  • Modify examples as needed to meet your PT's needs based on their content areas and classroom demographics.
  • Draw connections between the video on Slide 12 with you PT's field experience.
  • Prepare in advance a grouping strategy you will model when you pair your PTs for practice (Slide 16).
  • For the "Make it Your Own" activity on Slide 20, PTs may use their Coach's lesson plan, one they are writing, or an exemplar from a previous SBS.
  • PTs love to use practice time to ask questions of each other and you that are valid but unrelated to the task and distract from the practice.  Use a parking lot to help PTs stay focused.

2:28 Virtual Session - Collecting Data on Students Needs
  • Please use the training from 2/26 to support you with facilitating your first virtual session!
  • Practice beforehand and reach out A.S.A.P. if you need any help!

LI News Blast #1: Logistics and Reminders

Hello LIs!!  Congratulations on your first week of facilitating Skill Building Sessions for your PTS!  I'm sure they had many questions for you, and you for us!  Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for support. Please also accept my deepest apologies for not being with you the first two days of SBS!  I've been very ill and was so disappointed to miss you all on Wednesday and Thursday! Going forward, this blog will be your first stop shop for questions and reminders.  You'll be able to search by "label" to find the specific information you're looking for.  For example, this blog post contains information about our substitute policy, so searching for the key term "sub" or "substitute" will pull up this post for quick access in the future. Additionally, each Friday post will contain tips for facilitating the following week's SBS.  Read on for important updates and information! LI Absence and Substitute Policy Steps
Happy Friday!  9 WAKE-UPS UNTIL SPRING BREAK! Short and sweet this week! Summer Positions You all should have received an email inquiring about your availability and interest in working this summer.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You are also welcome to indicate in the reflection if you are only interested in subbing. Portfolios A few PTs have asked if the accumulation of points they receive on their assignments impacts whether or not they "pass" the program.  The answer is no.  Their assignments go into their Final Teaching Portfolio.  If they received a low score on an assignment, they can and should revise it before adding it to and submitting their Portfolio.  The overall score on their Portfolio  does  impact their ability to "pass" and teach in the Fall. PT Survey #2 Data Be on the lookout for your individual data with next steps!  We are still disaggregating data by LI.  You will have it before our meeting on April 16
