Happy Friday, LIs!  FOUR MORE WAKE UPS TO SPRING BREAK!!

As I visit Life Sciences, engage in discussions with you and PTs, review emails, check Exit Tickets, etc., I continue to be so impressed with how all of you go above and beyond for your PTs, supporting them both with their progress in the program and giving emotional support.

Exit Tickets
Exit Ticket submissions continue to be extremely low, likely in part because PTs are feeling overwhelmed; however, we take Exit Tickets very seriously.  I check them weekly and follow up with the program about PT responses as needed so we can improve as a program.  The overall submission rate on 4/10 was 60%.

Below is a breakdown of submission rates by SBS group:
  • CB Bilingual: 59%
  • ELA: 37%
  • ENL: 72%
  • Math (Lehman): 31%
  • Math (SJU): 93%
  • Science: 77%
  • Social Studies: 68%
  • Special Education 1-6 (Brooklyn College): 50%
  • Special Education 1-6 (SJU): 60%
  • Special Education 7-12 (Hunter): 79%
  • Special Education 7-12 (SJU): 65%
  • Special Education D75 1-6 (Hunter): 43%
  • Special Education D75 7-12 (Brooklyn): 94%
Please let me know if you would like me to follow up with your PTs who are not submitting their Exit Tickets. Otherwise, here is language you can use in an email, if you like:

Good morning/afternoon/evening, [PT Name]!

Thank you for all of your hard work in SBS! I appreciate your continued participation and enthusiasm.

When reviewing Exit Tickets, I noticed that you have a few missing. I know you are all extremely busy, but we take Exit Tickets very seriously. Myself and program staff review the responses weekly and use the feedback you provide to improve the program.

Please take a few minutes at the end of each session to reflect on the session and submit your feedback.

Best,
[LI Name]

4/16 Virtual Meeting
  • Our Virtual LI Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th from 4:30-6:30. Sign-in details are below and will be emailed to you as well.
    • Please note that although there is a call-in number, you are highly encouraged to join the online meeting so you can fully participate.
  • Please remember that if you are facilitating RCS on April 26th, you are required to attend the session, as we will be discussing and planning for RCS at the meeting.
  • At the meeting, we will:
    • Review Gateway 2 data, identify trends, plan for RCS, and do a deep-dive into our PT data from Survey #2.
    • Additionally, we will train and plan for a Virtual SBS on May 9th via Google Hangouts or Free Conference Call.
Hiring Fair
  • Your PTs should have received information about a hiring fair scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th from 3:30-5:30 at Mott Hall IV Middle School in Brooklyn.  If your PTs ask, please remind them that they cannot miss university classes or leave their field academy early to attend.  Any other questions they have can be directed to the Welcome Center.

Upcoming SBS:
4.17 - Educating All Learners Part 1

  • Emphasize to your PTs that ALL teachers are educators of students with special needs and English Language Learners, so they need to be aware of how to provide them with opportunities to engage with rigorous instruction.
  • I recommend making a copy of the Google Doc linked in the session for the digital Gallery Walk, then share that with your PTs only.  Otherwise EVERY SBS group will be typing in one document.
  • Based on what they learn in this session, the next assignment is to revise a previous lesson plan to include improved elements of Engagement, Representation, Action, and/or Expression to engage all learnersThe rubric referenced in the assignment description is linked in their syllabus (UDL Progression Rubric).
  • Remind PTs that there are Responsive Coaching Sessions being held on Friday, April 26th at 65 Court Street.
4.18 - Hiring Fair - no SBS

  • Encourage PTs to attend!  This is great practice and a chance to network!
  • Remind PTs as well that there is a hiring fair on Tuesday, April 16th.  They should have received an email from the program with details.

LI News Blast #1: Logistics and Reminders

Hello LIs!!  Congratulations on your first week of facilitating Skill Building Sessions for your PTS!  I'm sure they had many questions for you, and you for us!  Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for support. Please also accept my deepest apologies for not being with you the first two days of SBS!  I've been very ill and was so disappointed to miss you all on Wednesday and Thursday! Going forward, this blog will be your first stop shop for questions and reminders.  You'll be able to search by "label" to find the specific information you're looking for.  For example, this blog post contains information about our substitute policy, so searching for the key term "sub" or "substitute" will pull up this post for quick access in the future. Additionally, each Friday post will contain tips for facilitating the following week's SBS.  Read on for important updates and information! LI Absence and Substitute Policy Steps
Happy Friday!  9 WAKE-UPS UNTIL SPRING BREAK! Short and sweet this week! Summer Positions You all should have received an email inquiring about your availability and interest in working this summer.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  You are also welcome to indicate in the reflection if you are only interested in subbing. Portfolios A few PTs have asked if the accumulation of points they receive on their assignments impacts whether or not they "pass" the program.  The answer is no.  Their assignments go into their Final Teaching Portfolio.  If they received a low score on an assignment, they can and should revise it before adding it to and submitting their Portfolio.  The overall score on their Portfolio  does  impact their ability to "pass" and teach in the Fall. PT Survey #2 Data Be on the lookout for your individual data with next steps!  We are still disaggregating data by LI.  You will have it before our meeting on April 16
